6,7 and 8th Graders at Westminster
Sundays | Middler Activities
"Do not say, "I am only a youth" for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you." Jeremiah 1:7
6th & 7th graders
Middler students are ready to focus and explore the chronology of the bible, biblical themes
and church history. Veteran teachers Dave Carstensen and Bert Kelley are experienced with
working with this age group. This year our middlers have a new classroom, the first room on the balcony over the Parish Hall. Take stairs past Parish Hall or the elevator to the 3rd floor and it’s the first room on the balcony.
Confirmation Class -
8th graders
The confirmation class istradiaionally open to 8th graders and any Junior or Senior High who wants to learn the meaning and responsibility of an individual’s profession of faith in the Presbyterian Church. Confirmation teachers Gwen Ito, Mark Aquino and Debbie Katz lead the class in library in the Butzer building Sundays from 9:45 to 10:45 am. The confirmation class will share
the middler classroom on the 3rd floor over the Parish Hall. Take stairs past Parish Hall or the
elevator to the 3rd floor and it’s the first room on the balcony.
During their journey, confirmands will lead worship, work on mission projects and get to know their sponsors.
Confirmation Sunday is May 9, 2010.
The Westminster Middler program is designed to supplement and enhance our regular Sunday school and Confirmation classes, working with 6-8th graders at this unique state of their spiritual and social development.
This age group wants to be grown up in many ways, but are still youngsters in other areas. Our carefully supervised Middler group enables a variety of ages and personalities to be unconditionally accepted in a nurturing and stimulating environment.
Special Middler activities take place every 1-2 months, depending on the church calendar. Events include activities in community service, fellowship and spiritual growth events. In past years, “Middler only” activities have included: serving at the Christmas dinner, apple picking and Colden tubing.
Super Sundays – Every month Middlers, Senior Highs and their parents come together for dinner. After dinner, senior high and middlers have their own programs, and parents come together for Parent Forum.
Middler Work Camp is held every August, usually 2 weeks before the long Labor Day weekend, spanning from Monday - Thursday. A combination of mission outreach and fun activities fill this special week, and facilitate group bonding and enrichment that sets a positive tone for the rest of the year. Examples of Middler Camp activities include hiking along the Niagara gorge, serving lunch at Loaves and Fishes, and attending a Bisons game.
One of the main keys to the success of the Middler Program is parental commitment. Placing middler events on the calendar, planning busy schedules around church commitments if possible, providing transportation, and being positive about all middler events can all make a difference. Parents can carpool with other church families, or invite friends to middler activities anytime.
